Sir Matthew Smith, 'Landscape' 1954
This beautiful watercolour was painted by Modern British artist Mathew Smith (1879-1959). Smith studied at the Manchester School of Art and then later at the Slade in London. In Paris he studied under Henri Matisse and developed his interest from the Fauvist movement. Between World War One and World War Two Smith lived in Paris and Aix-en-Provence where this work was presumably painted, yet regularly came to England. Because Smith commenced his career as an artist later, in his thirties, it seems he reached his mature style from 1920s-50s. Therefore this work was made amidst this period and exemplifies his quintessential emphasis upon bold and emphatic linear rhythms that made him so famous.
